Campfire Leadership

Campfire leadership is a concept of leadership developed by Stuart MacAlpine to explore how groups can create a pyschologically safe ‘campfire’ to keep warm around. Around a campfire, we reflect on the day, think together, keep warm and sustained, and plan for our next expedition the next day. The stories we tell around the campfire are a powerful way to explore ideas and emotions. As we gather, we begin to form kinship with each other, and move towards a position of stewardship of the team and the world around us.

The model presents the loop between thinking and doing. Doing is the daily expeditions and routes we take as a team or individuals. The campfire is the place where we think. This loop out and back is represented in the follow graphic.
